AERA14 Division C: Annual Meeting Highlights
We are very excited about the Annual Meeting in Philadelphia and wanted to share some Division C highlights! As we planned the annual meeting, our goal was to build on the successful formats of previous years, while adding a few new sessions to keep the meeting interesting. Please take note of the following as you create your personal calendars.

OPEN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PRE-CONFERENCE SESSIONS FOR DIVISION C GRADUATE STUDENTS AND NEW FACULTY
(Thursday, April 3rd, see times below, Marriott, Fourth Level, Franklin 1 & 2)
As you are aware, Division C is extremely dedicated to providing mentoring for its graduate students and new faculty. One of our goals this year was to find a way to provide professional development sessions that would be open to all Division C students and new faculty. These sessions will take place in conjunction with the New Faculty Mentoring Seminar and the Graduate Student Research Seminar. While many of the activities for these groups are by invitation, this year’s seminar will include an open session on the Job Search for all interested Division C graduate students from 9:00-10:00am. This session will be followed by an Editor Panel for interested Division C graduate students and new faculty from 10:00-11:00am.

VICE-PRESIDENT’S CONFERENCE KLATCH: COFFEE AND CONVERSATION AMONG DIVISION C SCHOLARS AND GRADUATE STUDENTS
(Thursday, April 3rd, 11:00-12:00pm, Marriott, Fourth Level, Franklin 1 & 2)

Please make plans to attend the 2nd annual Vice-President’s Conference Klatch. The idea is to provide an opportunity for Division C graduate students to have coffee and conversation with scholars from our Division. The session will be informal, and we will provide nametags to facilitate meeting-and-greeting new folks. Last year was a huge success, and we would like that to continue. All Division C members are encouraged to attend!

DIVISION C BUSINESS MEETING
(Saturday, April 5th, 6:30-8:30pm, Convention Center, 100 Level, 113A)

The Division C Business Meeting will be held midway through the conference. In addition to briefing the membership on the work of the Division during the past year, we will continue our newest traditions (see below). Following the updates from the various committees, the Division will host a reception with refreshments and local music.
  • “Soaps-for-Suds” Exchange: Last year we began a tradition of finding at least one way that our Division can give back to the community where the annual meeting is taking place. This year we will be working in collaboration with Dr. Cynthia Tyson (AERA Member-At-Large) to reach out to local homeless shelters and churches. Our goal will be to collect as many “unopened hotel soaps” as possible to donate to individuals in poverty. As a way of encouraging members to bring their “soaps”, we are going to offer a “suds” (drink ticket) in exchange for “soaps” during the reception. Be sure to bring your soaps!
  • Highlighted Division Posters: As a way of highlighting the scientific research being conducted by Division members in poster sessions, Section Chairs/Co-Chairs have selected outstanding posters for display. The selected posters will be displayed at the Division reception by their authors. We encourage members to take the time to view the highlighted posters. This aspect of the meeting was very well received last year, and we hope to continue its success.

SESSION HIGHLIGHTS

VICE PRESIDENT’S MODERATED DEBATE
(Friday, April 4th, 10:35-12:05pm, Convention Center, 100 Level, 117)

This year we are piloting a new session format within Division C, one that we hope will become an annual event: Vice President's Moderated Debate. This session solicited questions from the division membership related to a selected theme.  Experts on various sides of the issue theme are then engaged in a discussion that is moderated in a debate fashion. This year's theme is "Educational Psychology and Learning Sciences: Complementary or Competing Interests for Educational Research and Practice?" Debating on this issue will be Patricia Alexander, Steven Graham, Sasha Barab and Carol Lee. The debate will be moderated by Peggy Van Meter. This should be an exciting session, please plan to attend.

CONFERENCE THEMED SESSION
(Saturday, April 5th, 10:35-12:05pm, Convention Center, 100 Level, 113A)

Building on the conference theme, Tim Urdan and Avi Kaplan have prepared an intriguing session titled, Maximizing the Benefit of Teacher/Researcher in Classroom Based Development and Implementation Projects. This highlighted session will focus on teachers' perspectives of partnering with researchers on the development and implementation of instructional interventions. Participants are teachers who have collaborated with researchers on research that aimed to improve instruction.
